IT WAS strange to feel so nervous. But Jet was such an important part of her life, and she was hoping that Nic would be an important part of her life and therefore it had to be important that they could at least tolerate each other.
âDon't stress so much,â Jet said, fiddling with camera lenses and putting them back into their slots in her bag.
âBut what if you don't like her?â
âI will.â
âWhat if she doesn't like you?â
âShe will.â
âYou sound awfully confident.â
âThere's no other way to be,â Jet grinned, zippering her bag shut and leaving it sitting in the corner of Klara's desk.
Klara sat down, then stood up again, her nerves too jangling to stay in one place.
âAnd it's not like you're marrying the girl,â Jet said. âI mean, technically you're helping her get married, but that's different. And for once you haven't declared your undying love so there's that...â She trailed off as she saw the look on Klara's face. âKlara!â
âI didn't! I just said that maybe I was falling in love with her. I didn't actually say I loved her. I justââ
âKlara, you really need to wear less of your heart on your sleeve. You can'tââ
Jet slammed her mouth shut as the door opened and Nic walked in. Klara felt a wave of comfort pass over her as she saw Nic, saw the curve of her smile, her familiar jacket. Suddenly, everything seemed like it was going to be okay again. No matter what Jet said. Her heart was beating hard, but she was in control of the situation.
âHey,â she said, standing up on tip-toes to kiss Nic's cheek. She felt a hand on her waist and her legs trembled. âUm, this is Jet, my best friend.â
Jet was smiling and Nic's hand was reaching out and they were shaking hands and Klara could see from Jet's smile that things were going okay. She slipped away from Nic's arm.
âI'm just going to collect my things,â she said. âI'll leave you two to get to know each other. Play nicely!â
And she escaped to the bathroom. She waited a good two minutes, checking her makeup and washing her hands and finally, grabbing her jacket from the hallway on her way back. As she opened the door she saw Jet and Nic so close that they were almost touching. Jet was speaking in a low voice, Nic was nodding solemnly.
âWhat's going on here then?â she asked.
âNot a thing,â Jet said, stepping back.
âNothing,â said Nic at the same time. She held out her hand. âShall we get out of here?â She didn't wait for an answer. âIt was lovely meeting you, Jet.â
âLikewise.â
Jet dropped Klara a wink as they were turning to the door, and Klara stuck out her tongue.
âI'll lock up here,â Jet said. âDon't you worry.â
And then they were outside, Nic taking her hand and all was right with the world and Klara felt herself relaxing into things. Everything was natural. That was the difference. Okay, so maybe she shouldn't have told Nic that she was falling in love with her.
